Identification of American Ginseng of Different Origins
1. Chinese ginseng (pictured on the left): smooth appearance, with few horizontal rings, no vertical groves. The aroma is mild and may taste sweet.
2. Canadian ginseng (pictured in the middle): yellowish in color, big and chubby, many horizontal rings, few vertical groves. The aroma and bittersweet taste are moderate.
3. Wisconsin ginseng from Monk Garden (pictured on the right): wrinkled, dense horizontal rings, deep vertical groves due to cold storage shrinkage. Aroma is strong and bittersweet taste long lasting.
Directions:
1. Recommended dosage: 0.5~2 g/day for general well-being, 2~6 g/day under illness. Adjust the dosage accordingly based on the individual health condition or follow your doctor's instructions. Use only 1/5 of the dosage for the wild ginseng, which is 0.1~0.5 g/day.
2. Do not mix use with veratrum nigrum.
3. Do not use ginseng when taking blood thinner unless supervised by your doctor.
4. Do not drink with tea as the tannic acid in tea would negatively affect the active ingredients of ginseng.
How to Take Ginseng:
Slicing: Take a handful of dry ginseng roots and steam for eight minutes in a steamer. Slice with a kitchen knife while hot, then keep the slices dry. Can be stored in the freezer.
1. Ginseng Tea: Add 5~6 slices of American Ginseng(2 g) into a bottle of purified water and shake for 2~3 mins. Slice the ginsenosides dissolve into the water quickly, dense foams would appear. You may drink the water and eat the slices in the end.
2. Simmering: Add 2g of ginseng slices in a pot with adequate amount of water. Simmer for 10 mins. Drink the water and eat ginseng slices.
3. Steaming: Add 2g of ginseng slices in a bowl with water. Soak for 20 mins before steaming for 20-30 mins. Drink before meal.
4. Mixing with eggs: Mix 2g of ginseng powder well with a raw egg and then steam it.
5. Chewing: Chew 2~4 slices of ginseng before breakfast and after dinner everyday.
6. Steeping: Add 2g of ginseng powder to a cup with honey. Pour in hot water and let it steep for 5 mins. Drink it before meal.
7. Stewing with chicken: Add ~10g of ginseng root to a black chicken with water and stew for 2 hours before salt is added. Eat the chicken with the broth daily.
8. Ginseng porridge: Cook porridge with 50g of rice and water. Add 2~5g of ginseng powder when the rice is boiled. Cook until done. Eat with breakfast daily.
9. Ginseng alcohol: Add 20g of ginseng to 500ml of Vodka or Rum. After two to four weeks, drink 20 ml twice a day before meal. Ginseng can be reused once.
